NEW DELHI: Union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari has called for reducing the cost of road construction by 25%, and identifying modern and green technologies that contribute towards the aim.

Gadkari launched a mobile app to monitor the plantations through geo-tagging and web-based GIS enabled monitoring tools, a government statement said on Friday.

The app, called ‘Harit Path’, has been developed by the National Highways authority of India to monitor the location, growth, species details, maintenance activities, targets and achievements of each of its field units for each and every plant under all plantation projects, the highways ministry said.

Gadkari has suggested that specialised people and agencies should be hired for plantation of trees along the highways, and that NGOs, Self help groups and Horticulture and Forest department should also be involved in this.

“While discussing new technologies in road construction, he (Gadkari) said that it should be our mission to reduce cost of construction by 25 % and for this new technologies are required,” the statement said.

“He said that specific areas like hilly areas, border areas and coastal areas need different approach and technologies,” it added
